Everyday cleaning

A room-by-room cleaning checklist for your home

Make a big cleaning job more manageable by working through one space at a time.

Start with a short walk-through

Before reaching for supplies, walk through your home and note the areas that need attention. Separate everyday tasks from jobs that need more time. A sticky kitchen counter and a dusty shelf may be quick wins, while built-up shower grime deserves its own place on the list. Pick your priorities rather than trying to do everything at once.

Work from higher surfaces to the floor

In each room, begin with accessible shelves and surfaces, then work downward. Dust can fall onto lower surfaces while you clean, so leave vacuuming or mopping until the end. Use tools appropriate for the material, and avoid soaking wood or other moisture-sensitive finishes. Follow the care instructions for furniture and flooring.

Give kitchens and bathrooms a separate checklist

Group kitchen tasks around countertops, sinks, stovetops, and appliance exteriors. In bathrooms, focus on sinks, mirrors, toilets, tubs, and showers. Use separate cloths for bathrooms and food-preparation areas. If you use a disinfectant, follow its label, including any required contact time and ventilation instructions.

Make your list useful for your next visit

A checklist also helps when requesting professional cleaning. Share the rooms that matter most, current condition, and any delicate surfaces. Use Gleam’s cleaning checklist as a starting point, then confirm the final tasks and any extra requests when discussing your estimate.

A little less on your to-do list.
